Time travel is part of the lore of fantasy and science fiction. Could I have been transported throughout the continuum and journeyed through the ages? Television and movies have shown that it is possible. Dr. Samuel Beckett was a fictional character and the protagonist of the science fiction television series of 1989 to 1993 called “Quantum Leap.” Scott Bakula portrayed Dr. Beckett for its five-year run. During the entire series, he jumped back and forth through time but has yet to make it home. With a new team in a new series that premiered in the fall of 2022, they find their way and return to the present day.
“Back to The Future” and Time Travel in Movies
An excellent example from the movies is a trilogy named “Back to The Future” that began in 1985. A stage musical has been running since February 2020. Its prominent character is Martin Seamus “Marty” McFly played in the movies by Michael J. Fox. He is nothing more than a vigorous American teenage boy who lives in California. Being curious, Marty heard about Dr. “Doc” Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd), a dangerous mad scientist, so he decided to sneak into his laboratory. Over time, the two somehow became friends, and they time-traveled “back to the future.”
The Concept of Time Travel
One definition of time travel is the concept of movement between specific points of time. It’s a change between points of space by an object or a person, typically using a hypothetical device, like a time machine. Whether time travel is possible in real terms is constantly debated by men and women everywhere. A possibility is offered by Queensland University in Australia, where scientists concluded that “Time travel is theoretically possible based on the many laws of physics. However, time travelers wouldn’t be able to alter the past in any measurable way … the future will remain the same”.
Personal Reflections on Time Travel
Traveling through time is a complex concept for me to fathom. However, I have had flashes of when I am time traveling. I’ve been there during history’s most decisive and defining moments, gazing upon the events as they unfolded… I am the reasonable one known as a time traveler, but is this logical and to history as the anointed one? I’ve been there, from The Crusades several centuries ago to George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River to humankind’s finest moments, including Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. Each millennium begins with my presence, but no one sees me.
Witnessing Key Historical Events
Two significant events occurred in 1776, and I was there for both. On July 4th, 1776, The Congress of the Thirteen Colonies approved the text of the Declaration of Independence with me as a silent, unseen witness. That day, history was made when the delegates agreed in principle to separate from Great Britain and form a new country. Twenty-nine days later, on August 2, the Declaration of Independence was officially signed inside the famous Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the rear corner of the room, I saw everything, but again, I was neither seen nor heard.
The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
Remarkable. Maybe right out of a science fiction book. Shall we continue? On April 14, 1865, I was in Ford’s Theater watching Our American Cousin when a disturbance occurred in an upper booth. Suddenly, a man jumped on the stage and ran off. That night, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Ninety-eight years later, on November 22, 1963, I was in Dallas, Texas, on Dealey Plaza when a motorcade carrying in one limousine was President John Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally, who were shot and subsequently sped by. Hours later, the President died. There has to be a logical explanation for why I appeared at these events. Check all the facts. The answer will be revealed later.
The Influence of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne
Authors H.G. Wells and Jules Verne wrote novels about time machines and time travelers back in the 1800s. Some of their characters met historical figures and were involved (ever so slightly) in incidents throughout the ages. Maybe each of the authors was a time traveler. What about Leonardo Da Vinci? Have any of us looked at his entire collection of works? Could he have been a time traveler? If not, he’s fascinating to research.
Time Travel and the Struggle for Democracy
In my experiences, I have often witnessed struggling people fall in the name of democracy and freedom. I’ve seen and will always be observing history from a straight and narrow view. This means I can show up anywhere where tyranny, stigma, discrimination, liberty, truth, and justice are threatened anywhere in this universe. My efforts will continue until people do what must be done for our breed to survive the ages and take our power back from the cruel measures of yesteryear. Of course, I will be there, waiting, watching, and hoping. Oh yes, the logical answer is I AM DAYDREAMING. But Am I?
Daydreaming vs. Time Travel: A Delicate Balance
So, am I a time traveler, or do I like to daydream? Have I been to these places and witnessed these primetime historical events? Not very likely. As for the other scenario, I only remember some of my dreams or daydreams. When I recall the dreams, they are generally not vivid or fully transferable. How do I describe what has transpired over different periods of my life? Why do I have to explain this to anyone? Naturally, there are three sides. Each opinion is two, and the truth is three. But whose truth? After careful consideration, I have yet to decide on either one.
Mental Time Travel and Its Possibilities
According to some scientists, whenever we remember something from the past or imagine something that will happen in the future, we engage in mental time travel. The community of researchers discovered that some of the same brain regions are activated whether we mentally travel back into the past or forward into the future. See, I can be doing both daydreaming and time traveling simultaneously.
The Future: A Watchful Eye on Humanity
I expect our freedoms and liberty to prevail over the bleakest incarnations of this humanity, one that is cherished in the beautiful spirit of the perverse converges. While I cannot plow a clear path for civilization to advance, my watchful eyes will always push humanity to continue looking inward, challenging our wonderful destiny and discovering its meaning in humanity’s potential and vast possibilities for its future.
Let Your Future Be Your Present
Let your future be your present. That saying summarizes past, present, and future, according to me. Using that expression since my college years keeps me focused on what needs to be done by using my past experiences. Our lives can and will continue to exist, plus I will secretly be in attendance, but only in my daydreams. I hope everyone will continue to survive healthy, wealthy, and wise forever and ever.
