Mission House owes its existence to the collaboration between four local churches: Christ Episcopal Church, Palms Presbyterian Church, St. Paul’s Catholic Church, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (then known as St. Francis Seaside Ministry). These dedicated congregations had been offering food and clothing from their facilities for more than ten years before coming together with 162 donors to purchase the property at 800 Shetter Avenue in February 1997. Within this changing landscape, Nurse Practitioners (NPs), particularly those specializing in psychiatric-mental health, are emerging as pivotal players in mental health care.
The Expansive Scope of Nurse Practitioners
At the core of an NP’s effectiveness is its comprehensive scope of practice, including diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic illnesses, prescribing medications, and ordering diagnostic tests. This broad spectrum of duties enables them to function autonomously, often serving as the primary care providers in various settings.
The impact becomes even more pronounced when we focus on Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs). PMHNPs possess advanced training in psychiatric evaluations, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology, allowing them to diagnose, treat, and manage mental illnesses.
For patients, this means more than just receiving medications. It entails holistic care that focuses on the entire person, addressing physiological and psychological aspects of mental health. PMHNPs can provide psychotherapy, offer patient education counseling, and prescribe medications, offering a well-rounded approach to mental health care.
Advocacy and Changing Regulations
The recognition of the immense value NPs bring to the healthcare system has led to significant advocacy efforts to expand their scope further. While the scope of practice varies by state, there’s a growing movement advocating for universal Full Practice status. This would allow NPs to evaluate patients, diagnose, interpret diagnostic tests, and initiate treatment plans without physician oversight, making mental health care even more accessible to those in need.
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners provides a detailed breakdown of the scope of practice for NPs and actively champions their role in transforming the future of healthcare.
Filling the Gaps in Mental Health Care
With the global rise in mental health issues and a significant shortage of psychiatric doctors in many areas, there is a pressing need for qualified professionals who can offer timely and effective care. NPs, with their comprehensive training and patient-focused approach, are exceptionally positioned to fill this gap.
In many rural and underserved areas, where psychiatric doctors are scarce, NPs often serve as the primary mental health care providers. Their ability to provide both medical and therapeutic care makes them invaluable in these settings.
Homelessness is a complex issue affecting countless individuals and families nationwide. In Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Mission House is a shining example of compassion and faith. This remarkable organization was born out of a collective dream shared by the faith communities in the Beaches area. For over two decades, Mission House has provided essential support and programs to assist those experiencing homelessness towards stability, self-sufficiency, and renewed hope.
Ashlee: A Dedicated Volunteer and Advocate for Mental Health:
Ashlee’s commitment to Mission House goes beyond typical volunteer duties. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, her role in the clinic stands out prominently. She volunteers her skills and knowledge and takes on leadership roles, serving as the chair of the Medical Advisory Committee and having a position on the Board of Directors.
In addition to her work at Mission House, Ashlee is also associated with the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS), where she’s the Assistant Program Director of Nursing and an Assistant Professor in the Nurse Practitioner program. This dual role of hands-on service and academic excellence gives Ashlee a unique perspective on the challenges homeless individuals face, especially those with mental health issues.
